The bob always looks great, is convenient, easy to maintain and definitely on trend. This hairstyle is arguably the most casual on the planet. The bob haircut can’t be beaten!
It started back in the 1920s. Women around the globe were fed up with the demands of stereotypical 'femininity'. In a first wave of deliberate non-conformance, women cut their long hair short if only for the reason that it was considered ‘unwomanly’ at the time. Usually, the hair was cut at a level around the bottom of the ear. Add an accurately cut straight fringe and you have the start of the bob, as we know it. In those early days, the bob was called a 'garcon cut', i.e. a 'boy cut'. Short hair does not necessarily take the feminine charm out of a woman, as seen with many stars and icons of the time, such as Coco Chanel and the silent movie star Louise Brooks. Both made a statement with their style – and they did not give up one iota of their femininity.
Good things can’t be stopped for long. In the 1960s the bob did not just come back in style, it dominated the scene, and it was easy to understand why. Women in the 1960s spent a lot of time and effort getting the water wave look just right. By contrast, the bob did not make such excessive demands on the women who dared wearing it. The bob was easy to style, easy to maintain and did not require elaborate techniques.
Designers and Stars Love the Bob Haircut
To this day, the ease of wear is one of the bob’s best and most appreciated features. Clare Waight Keller, designer for the fashion house Chloé, had the models wear the trendy bob haircut to complement the 2012 spring/summer collection. Many celebrities have now followed in her footsteps and are still trading in their long hairstyles for the more convenient mid-length or short bob haircut. Actress Keira Knightley likes to combine her bob haircut with soft waves, model Agyness Deyn uses the bob haircut as a stylish solution for the transition from her previous boy cut and, of course, Anna Wintour’s classic bob haircut is almost inextricably linked to her personality.
There are many good things to be said about the bob and its best feature is that it flatters every woman whether her hair is straight, wavy or curly. You may not like the original straight haircut with chin-length hair and straight fringes but they’ve come a long way from the 1960s. There are now long, short and layered bobs, with or without fringes, or even with straight or unevenly cut fringes.
