Whether you've got your own special event coming up or you're just trying to spice up your everyday hair routine, hairstyles with a twist are big on elegance and incredibly low maintenance. They are easy on the budget too, usually involving basic accessories such as hair grips, hair slides and hair ties.

If you've got long hair past your shoulders, try a romantic twist across the front of your hair. This look is pretty and polished for daytime.

For those ladies with short hair, this hairstyle doesn't exclude you from the twist trend. Half-twists can give you a fierce look if you tease your hair to create some volume and then tightly twist your hair back on the side of your head. Try it with curls or straight hair and don't be afraid to pair it with bold accessories.

This hairstyle requires less skill than braiding, and the results can be just as appealing and impressive. You may also like to twist the hair over your forehead into a quiff and pin it back or twirl the side of your side hair to create a semi-updo. Hair can be twirled into long rolls or piled into chignons of all kind. The style is yours to create.

Check out our gallery for some visual inspiration for your next twist or watch the video below in which Armin Morbach demonstrates how to style three chignon variations, including one with a twirled hair element.

Styling: Create a short low side parting and then take about a 2 inch wide strand of hair over your forehead and twirl it around sideways and towards the back of your head. As you move along, add small strands of hair from the side to the main strand and keep twirling. You may like to use hair grips to secure the twisted strand as you go. Once finished, secure the twirled strand at ear level using a hair grip. You may like to wear the rest of your hair down, twist it into a chignon or wear it as a ponytail

Styling: Use hair wax to keep your hair straight. Take about a 1 inch wide strand of hair at the temple and twist it around a few times. Tightly hold this strand while wrapping another 1 inch wide strand of hair around it. Twist the combined strands together a couple of times. Keep adding strands of hair in this fashion until reaching the back of your head around ear level. Twist strands of hair on the other side of your head in the same way and combine both twisted strands into a ponytail at ear level on the back of your head. For a nicer finish, wrap a thin strand of hair around the hair tie.

Styling: Create a straight side parting and comb your hair straight. Separate a large strand of hair over your forehead and temporarily secure it. On both sides of your head, twist a strand of hair at ear level upward and towards the back. On one of the sides, take the large strand of hair that you kept separate and sweep it to the side across the forehead. Starting with the end, add small strands of hair into the hair roll, twisting your hair into an upward roll towards the back of your head. You may need to secure with hair grips. Bring the  ends of both hair rolls into a casual, loose knot low in the centre of your neck.
