Trendy Hairstyle 2015: Backcomb Grunge

The Backcomb Grunge look gives all women the option to style themselves according to their mood. "The 'Do what suits you' motto is especially fitting for this look," explains photographer Mario Testino.

  • "If the look is worn in blonde, the colour should be really light – a beautiful white-blonde like Claudia Schiffer’s would be perfect," adds Schwarzkopf hair expert Armin Morbach. For instance, you can try Claudia Schiffer’s own personal shade – Blonde UltÎme 10-1 Light Cool Blonde, perfect for this look. Otherwise, the hair should be at least chin-length and gathered up in a loose ponytail at the back of the head and you can decide whether you want a central or side parting. Armin Morbach recommends intensely nourishing products to help maintain the look to ensure the hair structure is beautifully healthy and well-maintained. Simply include a deep conditioning treatment into your hair care regime every week - Essence UltÎme Omega Repair Mask only takes 1 minute to give you beautifully nourished hair.

Backcomb Grunge: What particularly distinguishes this look?
ARMIN MORBACH: The look can transform a totally ordinary blonde into something really quite special. It would look marvellous on a pretty blonde with lighter eyebrows.

What kind of blonde is it best suited to? And what’s the shortest the hair can be to carry off this look?
ARMIN MORBACH: The colour is important. It’s a light, clear blonde, but with a matte texture, and always looks a little ashy. However, the look also works beautifully in red. Brunettes can also wear Backcomb Grunge. In order to gather the hair easily at the back of the head, it should be at least shoulder-length. The proportions will work especially well if the hair is, say, ten or twenty centimetres longer again.

Bleaching and backcombing is hard on the hair. What hair care regime would you recommend to keep the hair soft and shiny?
ARMIN MORBACH: That’s right. You should absolutely not backcomb blonde-dyed hair every day, but now and then for going out at the weekend won’t damage the hair. I’d also always recommend backcombing the hair with a brush instead of a comb, because combs make the hair more fragile faster.

What style would suit Backcomb Grunge?
ARMIN MORBACH: You can create a really harmonious appearance by combining the style with 60s and 70s fashion. The look would also be cute paired with simple boyfriend jeans, a t-shirt, and red lipstick.

Backcomb Grunge is a little reminiscent of Brigitte Bardot, isn’t it?
ARMIN MORBACH: You’re not wrong! That’s where the look comes from, of course, but in her time there were also a lot of brunettes who styled their hair that way – like Sophia Loren and Gina Lollobrigida.

The hair is backcombed at the root to create volume. The front hair is combed flat and straight across the forehead. A spritz of got2b Rise ‘n Shine hairspray will add volume and shine whilst holding the style in place.
