American sitcoms and dramas are very popular in the UK especially 'How I Met Your Mother', 'The Big Bang Theory' and 'Mad Men'. The stars that feature in these shows shine off screen with their fabulous hairstyles and on trend outfits.

  • Girls

Girls is an American TV series that features women in their twenties with college degrees who have big ideas for their future. With her parents no longer paying her bills, Hannah (Lena Dunham) tries to keep afloat doing all kinds of office jobs while trying to make it as a writer. She teams up with her three best friends Marnie (Allison Williams), Jessa (Jemima Kirke), and Shoshanna (Zosia Mamet) to make a living in Brooklyn, NY. Throughout the series the four young women remain creative, completely honest and hilarious.

  • Hart of Dixie

Hart of Dixie is an American comedy-drama where newly licenced physician, Zoe Hart (Rachel Bilson) loves her home turf in New York. However, fate and an inheritance made her the owner of a general practitioner’s office in a small Southern US town. Zoe gets stuck in the backwaters of Alabama to have it out with the stubborn locals in the village of Bluebell. Love throws another spanner in her plans when she meets Dr Brick Breeland.

  • How I Met Your Mother

The expectation of a happy ending is one of the major attractions of the ‘How I Met Your Mother’ series. Ted (Josh Radnor) found his dream woman (Cristin Milioti), married her and had children with her. Now, 25 years later, he tells his children how it all happened in the face of mounting obstacles. His best friends are the main characters in his stories. Among these friends are the up and coming lawyer Marshall (Jason Segel) who is engaged to the teacher Lily (Alyson Hannigan), ladies’ man Barney (Neil Patrick Harris) who has more to deliver than just his legendary humour and gift of gab and last but certainly not least, the attractive Robin (Cobie Smulders) who Ted cannot help but date over and over again.

  • Mad Men

Mad Men is set in the early 1960s where a chain-smoking womaniser Don Draper (Jon Hamm) is a success in the advertising agency Sterling Cooper in New York City. Dark spots in Don’s past surface as the series develops. The series draws its main tension and interest from professional competition, private relationships and extramarital affairs. The series reflects on the societal norms of the 1960s while providing hopeful outlooks to the future.

  • The Big Bang Theory

The Big Bang Theory is based on two genius physicists, Leonard Hofstadter (Johnny Galecki) and Sheldon Cooper (Jim Parson). They are certainly familiar with the structure of atoms. Too bad their genius does not extend to socialising with women. Leonard has a thing for his neighbour Penny (Kaley Cuoco) who is all Leonard is not. While waitress Penny fits the cliché of the naive blonde, she is also socially competent and brings a healthy dose of common sense to the group. She is a puzzling phenomenon for the two educated boys next door. At least in this series, opposites attract. Soon the waitress and the two physicists form an unbeatable trio who stand for love, excitement and the wisdom of mixing life with humour.

  • The Styles of the American TV Stars

The looks and styles of the stars on  American TV influence our perceptions and inspire our fashion and hairstyle choices. 'Hart of Dixie' star Rachel Bilson’s New York City style is certainly conspicuous in the small Alabama town. In real life, she makes her mark in quite a different way. Her choices are restrained and her brown wavy hair is casually swept to the side (see the photo above).

In the TV series 'Girls', actress Allison Williams plays Marnie, the best friend of the main character Hannah (Lena Dunham). The two actresses are also good friends in real life. While Lena prefers styles on the wild side, Allison’s temperament leans toward classic looks.  In our photo, the side-swept braid emphasises her classy style.

Jaime King’s character Lemon Breeland in 'Hart of Dixie' is emotional and neurotic. Away from the series, her actions and thinking are down-to-earth. The crown braid flatters her bohemian appearance.

In 'Mad Men', Megan Draper is the second wife of womaniser Don Draper. Empathy wins her a lot of attention but most of her appeal is based on her attractive personality. The casual long bob underscores her feminine beauty.
